Grape Variety
Barbera is the most cultivated grape variety in Piemonte. It transmits decisive hints of red fruit to the wines, which can vary greatly in hue, depending on the soil, maturation and winemaking techniques. Barbera wines are characterized by easy drinkability and a marked acidity. The hand of the man (uomo), in the cultivation in the vineyard and in the cellar, determines the final characteristics of the Barbera wines.
Terroir
Roero is a small wine region in Piemonte on the right shore of the Tanaro river. The soils are mainly made up of sandstones (sedimentary rocks of marine origin), often mixed with limestone or sand; they are very rich in mineral salts. The climate is particularly dry, with little rainfall which is not retained by sandy soils. During the maturation period there are always favourable temperature ranges. In some areas the vineyards have slopes so strong that people talk about of “heroic” viticulture.
Uomo
Antonio (everyone calls him Tonino) was among the first to understand the potential of this territory, founding almost 50 years ago the primitive association of winemakers who would later give life to the Roero Arneis Docg wine. Tonino owns several other vineyards in the towns of Vezza d’Alba, where he grows the Barbera grape. For this wine, a thinning is carried out before maturation and a long refinement in large barrels is chosen. In this way the Barbera wine softens its natural acidity and is suitable for a long aging.
Vinification and finishing
Vinification “in red” with maceration for 12-15 days. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine undergoes a very complex aging process; at least one year in large 40-hectolitre barrels, followed by a rest in steel tanks, bottling and a long aging in the bottle.
Tasting notes
Intense and limpid ruby red wine. The aromas are fruity, plum jam prevails. The evolution of the aromas in the glass makes you feel first the scent of dried plums, then delicate spicy hints (nutmeg and white pepper). In the mouth it looks like a full-bodied wine, with a perfect balance between ripe fruit, velvety tannins and acidity. Long and persistent.
